Speed up a slow WooCommerce site
Six seconds is a long time to stare at a blank screen. That's how long some WooCommerce shops make phone shoppers wait, and most give up well before the checkout button appears.
Where it hurts
It usually creeps up on you. The site was quick when it launched, then over a few years you added a slider, a booking plugin, a reviews widget, a chat box, three more plugins nobody remembers installing, and a theme that does far too much. Now every page drags.
You feel it most on mobile, which is where most of your customers are. The images are the full size straight off someone's camera, the hosting is the cheapest shared plan going, and the cart page pauses long enough that people wonder if it's broken.
Google notices too. Slow pages sink down the search results, so you pay for it twice: fewer visitors, and fewer of those who arrive sticking around to buy.
What I'd build
I'd start by measuring what's actually slow rather than guessing, using PageSpeed Insights and query monitoring to see which plugins and queries are the real drag. Then the practical fixes: proper caching (WP Rocket or similar), images resized and served in modern formats, unused plugins removed, and often a move to hosting built for WooCommerce rather than a bargain shared box. I test each change on a copy first, so your live shop never goes down while I work.
What changes
- Pages typically load in a couple of seconds, especially on mobile
- Fewer shoppers abandon before they reach checkout
- Your search ranking benefits from the faster load
- You know which plugins were the problem, and they're gone
