Digital loyalty cards instead of paper stamps

The paper stamp card is a good idea let down by a lousy bit of card. Customers lose them, forget them, or find them washed to pulp in a coat pocket. The reward's real, the card's the problem.

Where it hurts

You want to reward the regulars, the people keeping the lights on, and give the occasional ones a reason to make a habit of it. A loyalty scheme is the obvious answer.

But the physical version is a faff for everyone. You're printing cards, staff are hunting for the stamp, customers can never find theirs, and you've no idea who's actually loyal because there's no record of any of it.

So it either never happens, or it runs half-heartedly and you can't tell if it's working. Meanwhile the chains have slick app-based schemes and yours is a smudged rubber stamp.

What I'd build

I'd set up a scheme that lives on the customer's phone, no app for them to download and no cards for you to reorder. Usually a digital stamp or points card they add to their phone wallet, or a simple number they give at the till. It tracks visits or spend, rewards automatically at the level you set, and gives you a quiet by-product you never had before, a record of who your regulars actually are, which feeds straight into your win-back and newsletter efforts. I'd tie it to your till or booking system where that's sensible so nobody's keying things twice.

What changes

  • Loyalty on the customer's phone, no cards to print or lose
  • Rewards trigger automatically at the level you choose
  • You finally see who your genuine regulars are
  • Feeds your newsletter and win-back lists for free
